My name is Wesley Harris. If you don’t know me, I’m a third-term member of the NC House of Representatives and the only PhD economist in the North Carolina legislature. I was one of ten Democrats who flipped a Republican-held seat in 2018, and now I’m running for State Treasurer so that we can invest in our most valuable resource: our people.
Growing up, my parents taught me that government can be a force for good in our communities when it invests in them. But growing up in a rural community out in the foothills, I also had a front-row seat to what happens when investment dries up. Opportunity leaves, our most vulnerable suffer, and folks lose hope.
For too long, too many of our neighbors have been living under a state government that doesn’t see the value in every community. A state government that hasn’t been willing to invest in them.
The State Treasurer’s office should be first in line to invest in our people—but over the last six years, the current Treasurer has been more concerned with job-killing culture wars, denying healthcare to vulnerable members of minority groups, and trying to get CEOs fired for investing in renewable energy. If we don’t cut out the games and get back to the job at hand, I’m afraid of what might be in the cards for our state.
Like my parents said: government can, and should, be a force for good. But that goodness is a choice, and we’ve got to have someone at the helm who’ll be willing to put our people first. Someone who’ll be willing to plan for the long-term good of our state, not just for their next campaign. I believe that North Carolina is overflowing with potential, and we are primed to take the lead in the 21st century economy—but not if we don’t get serious about meeting the challenges that lie ahead.

You’re receiving this email because of the support you’ve given in the past to Democratic campaigns like mine. If you choose to stick around on my mailing list, you can expect a couple of emails a week about the latest news, important action items, and, yes, requests for donations. Unfortunately, politics requires money, and I’m not someone who can just loan myself a million dollars whenever I need it. (If only, right?) That said, I promise that I’m not going to be one of those candidates. You know the ones. I’ve gotten some pretty bad emails over the years that made me feel like the person sending them just wanted to squeeze money out of me, and I don’t ever want to make you feel that way. I’ll be blunt that flipping this seat is going to take considerable grassroots support, but that’s just not who I am.
If that sounds good, then I hope you'll stick around, John. But I get it if that’s not your thing—our inboxes are precious, so if you’re not interested, you can unsubscribe at this link. Either way, I hope I can earn your support, and I'm glad to meet you. |

P.S. If by chance this email landed somewhere other than your normal inbox, can you do me a favor and move it there? That'll help make sure you don't miss anything moving forward. |

Wesley Harris is a North Carolina native and the only PhD economist in the General Assembly. First elected in 2018, he has been fighting hard for the residents of southern Mecklenburg County and working to make our state the best place in the country to live, work, and start a family. Now, Wesley is running for Treasurer to return common sense to our state government and build opportunity for every North Carolinian.
