Sardis was once the capital of the legendary King Croesus’s kingdom of Lydia. The city’s complacency and decline were mirrored in the church in Sardis—the church had started well but was now dozing, stuck in spiritual sleep and lulled by worldly pleasures and riches.

Jesus’s message to the church in Sardis is the harshest of the seven letters to the churches. At the time, Sardis was the epitome of lust and pleasure-seeking. Even living in the city marked a person as being immoral. With no zeal for the Gospel, the self-indulgent lifestyle of the culture had rubbed off on the church. Christ called the church in Sardis to wake from its sleep and repent before His return.
