This report, released annually since 2011, describes activities by BJS to collect and improve data on crime and justice in Indian country, including
* data-collection programs and activities during 2018 and 2019
* tribal participation in national records and information systems
* the most recent statistical findings on American Indians and Alaska Natives in the federal justice system.
This report meets the requirement of the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010 (TLOA; P.L. 111-211, 124 Stat. 2258, 251(b)) to report annually on BJSs activities to establish and enhance a tribal crime data-collection system.

*"Arrest-Related Deaths Program: Pilot Study of Redesigned Survey Methodology"* [ [link removed] ]
This report presents the methodology and findings from a pilot study that used a combination of open-source news searches and a survey of law enforcement agencies and medical examiners and coroners offices to identify deaths that occurred in the process of arrest by law enforcement officials. The pilot study collected data on the manner and cause of death, decedent characteristics, and incident characteristics, including actions taken by law enforcement officers and decedents. Findings indicate that the open-source methodology alone identifies the majority of law enforcement homicides, but agency surveys aid in identifying deaths by other causes (e.g., accidents, suicides, and natural causes).

This report provides statistics from BJSs annual data collection on capital punishment, including the number of prisoners executed each year from 1977 through 2017, the number and race of prisoners under sentence of death at year-end 2017 by state, and the average elapsed time from sentence to execution by year from 1977 through 2017.

This technical report describes the survey methods used to carry out the Survey of Prison Inmates, 2016. Previously known as the Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, this national survey has been conducted periodically since 1974 among state prisoners and since 1991 among federal prisoners. This report discusses the universe of prisons and prisoners, the sample design, the selection of prisons and prisoners, the consent process, the response rates, and the post-survey adjustments and weighting procedures.
