Hey comrades! Here's what's going on this week in our chapter:
TONIGHT! June 7 at 7pm | Our Municipal Action Committee meeting in person at Twelve Mile Limit (500 S Telemachus St)! This will be a discussion-centric meeting about the closing legislative session, preparing for the state elections in Oct. and Nov., and more discussion about our chapter’s electoral strategy before we vote on it at Local Convention.
TOMORROW! June 8 at 7pm | How To Write a Resolution Workshop — Join us for a workshop on how to draft your own proposals to present to membership for a vote at the Local Convention or the next General Meeting! Register here.
SATURDAY! June 10th at 11:59pm | Local Council Nominations are due! Submit nominations for 2023-24 chapter leadership to [email protected]. You may nominate as many members as you like, but no one may nominate themselves! All the positions are available here.
Thursday, June 15th: The Political Education Reading Group will be meeting from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss the book Working in the Big Easy: The History of Labor and Politics in New Orleans.
Saturday, June 24th: Mark your calendar for our Local Convention! Our Local Convention is an annual meeting that happens every year in the first six months of the year. Our members vote on chapter leadership, amendments to our bylaws, take up electoral endorsements and take up business related to the political direction of our chapter (New Orleans DSA) in the coming year. We will be holding a hybrid convention, with in person meeting at the John Thompson Legacy Center on St. Bernard Avenue. RSVP HERE!
*Local Convention differs from the National Convention. The 2023 DSA National Convention will take place in Chicago, Illinois, on August 4th-6th. Our Chapter has elected 7 delegates (and one alternate) to attend the National Convention. The National Convention is held every other year, and is the highest decision-making body of the organization. Delegates from across the country will meet to set our course for the next two years and elect our new National Political Committee (NPC), which functions as DSA’s highest decision-making body between conventions. Stay tuned as our delegates will send out a survey to get a better of what issues are most important to our New Orleans and Louisiana DSA members!
Support our comrades with Real Name Campaign by emailing the governor to tell him to veto any anti-LGBTQ+, anti-child bills that come across his desk.
Sample Email here. Send Email here.
Reach out to your elected state representative and senator as well to ask if they will call on the Governor to veto the anti-LGBTQ+ bills, and vote to uphold the veto if necessary. Find your legislators here.
Thursday, June 22 at 6pm, Parish Hall, 2533 Columbus St. Real Name Campaign and Freedom Road Socialist Organization will host an Eyewitness Report Back on LGBTQ Rights in Cuba. Last year, the Cuban people ratified the most progressive families code in the world, expanding the rights of women, children, youth, LGBTQ+ people, and others. At this report back, attendees will hear from local activists, organized by Women in Struggle, who traveled to Cuba to learn about these changes.

TONIGHT! June 7 from 6-8pm | Hangout with our comrades from Trystereo and help assemble Narcan and safe injection kits. There will be a Narcan/overdose reversal training towards the end (around 7:30/7:45pm).
This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with how Narcan works and what other supplies can help make using drugs safer. Chat with other folks interested in harm reduction! It’s like a knitting circle but way cooler (and lifesaving). There will be beer + seltzer and pizza from Pizza Delicious.
The people of Atlanta are uniting for a ballot referendum campaign to stop Cop City and to demand investment in healthcare, education, housing, green space, and public transit for all Atlantans. Whether you live in Atlanta, or anywhere in the country, you can join the movement and get involved to Stop Cop City. Sign up here.
The Atlanta Community Press Collective tirelessly live-tweeted 15 hours of public comment this week. Check out their thread here.
Our comrades with Southern Solidarity would greatly appreciate donations and more volunteers to support their work this Summer! Southern Solidarity is a grassroots, community-based group of volunteers in solidarity with the unhoused in their quest toward liberation. They organize the delivery of food, medical resources and basic needs directly to the unhoused in the downtown area of New Orleans because our government has not filled this need. Donate to help them get more supplies to distribute. Volunteer for food prep and delivery.
Solidarity forever,
DSA New Orleans Local Council
