Support Our Work

Dear Reader,

I'm Sarah Butrymowicz, senior editor for investigations at The Hechinger Report.

Thanks to loyal supporters, I had the resources to look into long-stagnant legislation to ban long-term suspensions in New York State. Students who receive these extended suspensions typically receive only an hour or two of academic instruction a day, if at all. They can wind up feeling isolated and struggle when they return to the classroom; research suggests they’re also less likely to earn credits and ultimately graduate when they return to school.

We obtained data from 17 of the state's largest school districts, listened to students who'd been suspended for months while receiving little academic support, and broke down the consequences of this practice.

And we have already seen progress: This spring, the bill received its first hearing after nearly a decade of languishing in committee.

Though this in-depth reporting will always be free to readers, it's not free to produce.  If you see the value of our recent efforts, please help us in our sprint to raise $10,000 this season.
Your donation will allow us to speak to more students, leaders and educators; uncover stories that matter; and hold those in power accountable for their actions.

Please consider supporting our work and helping us reach our fundraising goal.

With gratitude,

Sarah Butrymowicz
