In recent weeks, there have been a series of Iran-related developments that should be cause for concern for anyone interested in U.S.
national security interests, the survival of the Jewish state, the future of nuclear weapons proliferation, and/or the innocent people living in Iran and anywhere else the Islamic Republic’s tentacles might reach.
Bad
For starters, there have been intermittent reports that the Biden administration is once again seeking to revive nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Republic. We won’t bother rehashing the volumes written by us, as well as numerous others, covering the foolishness of appeasing tyrants like those who rule in Tehran. Needless to say, our position remains the same: there must be a fundamental change to the regime’s nuclear ambitions and nature before any sanctions relief should occur.
And the Biden administration is learning, yet again, that negotiating with terrorists (or their radical backers) only produces more demands. Laura Holgate, the US ambassador to the UN’s international organizations spoke at a hearing of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the heels of the IAEA announcing that it had closed its probe (despite failing to get accurate answers) into unexplained man-made uranium found at an undisclosed nuclear site a few hundred miles from Tehran.
During her remarks, Holgate noted that Iran’s demands that the IAEA set aside standard safeguards aimed at preventing surreptitious nuclear development “are simply impossible to accept.” We could have told her Iran’s demands would be absurd, but we’re glad the Biden administration has figured it out. We’ll see how long that lesson sticks.
Worse
The Biden administration is not alone in repeatedly making the same mistakes with regard to Iran; in fact, they aren’t even the worst offenders. That illustrious prize goes to the United Nations.
In recent weeks there have been efforts made to undo Iran’s appointment as chair of the UN Human Rights Council’s Social Forum. Those efforts have not succeeded, and compounding the problem, in the interim, Tehran was elected to the UN General Assembly’s Committee on Disarmament and International Security, and even now holds one of the General Assembly’s Vice-Presidential seats.
That’s right folks, the UN has decided Iran should chair a human rights forum, sit on the panel aimed at disarmament and international security, and even given Tehran a seat at the UN’s high table. How far both the Biden administration and the UN have fallen from their support for the concepts of “women, life, freedom.”
Worst
While the UN’s aiding and abetting of Iran’s worst crimes is wretched, Iran’s own actions and efforts have a direct and harmful impact on the region and the world at large. From backing terrorists to supplying arms to Russia, Iran continues to show it has zero regard for human life. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that we are troubled by news that Iran has developed (or at least claimed to have developed) a hypersonic missile capable of traveling 15 times the speed of sound. We won’t beat around the bush, the goal of such a weapon is to deliver a payload that would get through Western missile defense capabilities and take the lives of as many innocent people as possible.
The good news is that for years the U.S. and Israel have been partnering together to develop a method for defeating the hypersonic missile threat. And while one should be concerned Iran is developing such a weapon, take solace in the knowledge that the last time the U.S. and Israel partnered to develop a missile defense system, Iron Dome (among others) was born. In fact, the jointly developed Arrow-3 anti-ballistic missile defense system was made operational in 2017. Moreover, just this week, Israel’s Defense Minister responded to Iran’s hypersonic missile claims by noting unequivocally that Israel can defeat whatever her enemies have in store for her.
You’ll be pleased to hear that Congress has not been sitting idly by as the threat of Iran’s drone and missile programs increases. In early May, Representatives Michael McCaul (R-TX), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Joe Wilson (R-SC), and Dean Phillips (D-MN), introduced legislation that would “impose sanctions on a wide range of activities supporting Iran’s missile and drone program ahead of the October 2023 expiration of the UN missile ban on Iran.”
The U.S. and Israeli militaries are doing what they need to do. Congress seems to be moving in the right direction as well. That leaves us, the stalwart supporters of Israel, with a clear path to fulfilling our role in this fight between good and evil. We must show up and speak out in support of the policies that will keep our country, Israel, and frankly the free world safe. And that’s exactly what we’ll be doing in mid-July when the annual CUFI Summit convenes in our nation’s capital. We hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
The CUFI Action Fund Team
