Increasing numbers of Americans are suffering from the devastating impact of extreme weather events.
John, we know you’ve definitely felt the difference over the past few summers. Temperatures are higher and heat waves stretch on longer than normal. And there’s no question that climate change is at the heart of these trends.
Now, researchers warn of a major public health and safety risk for these hot summer days: blackouts.
According to a study published in Environmental Science and Technology, the number of major city blackouts has more than doubled since 2015. And if these blackouts occur when extreme heat is on the forecast, it can escalate into a serious health concern.
Take Phoenix, for example. The city practically runs on A/C to survive in the desert. But if disaster strikes for a blackout during the hottest summer days, nearly 800,000 lives would be at risk.
John, the globe is getting hotter. And this summer is primed to create heat-related states of emergency across the country.
Increasing numbers of Americans are suffering from the devastating impact of extreme weather events. If we don’t act NOW, many regions of our world will be unlivable.
