As we shared in the Summer Term Newsletter, in the Spring Budget 2023 the Chancellor announced a revolution in childcare, 30 hours for every child over the age of 9 months with working parents by September 2025, where eligibility will match the existing 3-4 year olds 30 hours offer.? This will be introduced in phases to give the sector time to prepare for the changes, so this is just a reminder of what is expected to come in Autumn 2023;
An increase to the national hourly rate to be paid to childcare providers by the government, to help deliver the existing 30 hours entitlements.? We are currently awaiting further details on how this will be distributed.
The pilot of incentive payments to childminders signing up to the profession to increase the number available and increase choice and affordability for parents.
Increasing the staff-to-child ratio so one member of staff will be allowed to look after 5 children aged 2 years old, bringing England in line with Scotland and other comparable countries.? These changes are optional and intended to give providers more flexibility in how they run their businesses
Parents on Universal Credit will be able to access funds upfront to make it easier for them to get a job or increase their hours.? This removes any gap in funds and eases parents into the childcare costs payment cycle.? The maximum amount of support will also be increased by almost 50%.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) government consultation
Launched on Wednesday 31 May 2023, closes at 11:45pm on 26 July 2023
In the Government?s Spring Budget, the Chancellor announced the single biggest investment in childcare ever made in England. By 2027-28 this Government expects to be spending in excess of ?8bn every year on the early years, helping working families with their childcare costs. The government want to work closely with the sector to ensure early years providers are ready and able to offer these new entitlements.
The government are proposing to make changes to a range of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements to offer providers increased flexibility and alleviate known burdens. So that practitioners can focus on providing children in their care with a high-quality early education and progressing their careers and parents can access the childcare they want for their children
The proposals in this document set out how we plan to make the EYFS a more practical and usable document for different types of provider.
This consultation builds on the measures consulted on in Summer 2022 and announced at the Spring Budget 2023. The changes to 2 year old staff to child ratios and supervision whilst eating are due to come into force in September 2023, subject to parliamentary procedure.
?
The proposed changes are intended to:
offer providers more flexibility?
reduce known burdens?
enable practitioners to provide high-quality early education?
make it easier for practitioners to join the workforce and progress their careers?
