A week in parliament

London Councils has sent briefings to London MPs ahead of three debates in the House of Commons this week on matters affecting London local government.

On Monday, MPs debated the role local government has to play in achieving 'net zero'. Ahead of the debate, London Councils briefed London MPs on London boroughs' Climate Action Plans, the range of cross-borough collaborative programmes to reduce carbon-based emissions and improve the capital's resilience to severe weather, and the innovative 3Ci partnership founded by London Councils, Connected Places Catapult and Core Cities UK to securing private investment into place-based net zero delivery. You can read our briefing here.

On the same day, MPs debated delivering new housing supply and London Councils briefed MPs on the challenges of addressing the capital's acute housing shortage. While London Councils welcomes the government’s recent changes to Public Works Loan Board borrowing rates and rules around the use of Right to Buy receipts, we believe further intervention is needed if affordable housebuilding is to continue. You can read our briefing here.

Later today, there will be a Westminster Hall debate exploring the issues and implications around pupil roll numbers and schools closures in London. Following our report earlier this year on school places in
London
, which found that London local authorities and schools are currently dealing with a significant and sustained period of reduction in demand for reception and Year 7 places, we have briefed London MPs on the report's main findings and policy implications. You can read our briefing here.

Volunteer's week

Today marks the end of Volunteer's Week, an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities.

An army of volunteers provide a daily lifeline for Londoners, and London Councils and the GLA have been working with a network of London based voluntary groups to support the London Lifelines campaign to shine a light on volunteering in London and the vital role it plays in powering and sustaining our communities all year round.

You can read more about the campaign on the London Lifelines website here.

By election result

Tommy Gale (Labour) was elected to represent the South Hampstead ward in Camden at a by-election last week. The by-election followed the resignation of Cllr Will Prince.

You can read the result in full here.
