CALL TO ACTION: Help Tenants Fight an Unlawful Mass Eviction

On May 8, the real estate corporation Douglas Emmett, Inc. announced it would withdraw all 712 units of rent-controlled housing at the Barrington Plaza apartment tower from the market in order to perform renovations on the property. The evictions will displace hundreds of tenants into the market, driving up rents for existing units, contributing to overcrowding and displacement from the city.

We need you to call City Council tomorrow to condemn these evictions!

Updates on the fight for single-payer healthcare

In a major step toward groundbreaking reform of California’s healthcare financing and delivery system, the State Senate recently passed SB 770 by a vote of 30 aye to 9 no. The bill, which is sponsored by the Healthy California Now coalition, sets forth tangible steps on a concrete timeline to make California the first state to guarantee residents a standard set of comprehensive, high quality health benefits regardless of age, income, employment status, disability status, immigration status, or any other characteristic.

DSA-LA is a proud member of the Healthy California Now coalition, joining allied labor unions affiliates such as the California Nurses Association, UNITE HERE, and the California Teachers Federation in our joint struggle for a single-payer health care system in the Golden State.

Support striking writers this week!

Thursday, June 8 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

The Writers Guild of America is on strike, and we’re turning out to support workers on the picket lines. Westside Branch will be joining workers on the picket lines at Amazon Studios in Culver City. Wear red if you can, and look for the DSA banner. We’ll be bringing empanadas and coffee.

Can’t make it to the picket line but want to support the strike? Donate to the snacklist: https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/the-snacklist-support-striking-workers

Power to the Tenants Working Group Meeting

Thursday, June 8 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The second meeting of DSA-LA’s priority campaign on housing. We will share updates on each of the components of this campaign since last week and prepare goals to report for our biweekly meetings on 6/22 and 7/6.

We look forward to seeing you and discussing our chapter’s contribution to the fundamental Los Angeles questions of land use, the real-estate industries’ political power, and the exploitation of public authority for private gain—questions that will set the backdrop for the 2024 elections.

NIGHT SCHOOL – Class Struggle and Socialist Strategy Part 4: Socialist Strategy and Electoralism

TONIGHT! June 6 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join the DSA-LA Political Education Committee for our class, Socialist Strategy and Electoralism. Given the absence of a strong workers party and the structural limitations of the American electoral system, organized socialists’ strategic orientations towards electoral contests have long been an important and contested topic. This session assesses the barriers and opportunities to building an independent workers party, and outlines the range of socialist perspectives on engagement with the Democratic Party in the short- and medium-term.
