The report underscores the harms created by hate and extremism,
particularly for Black and Brown communities, and uplifts stories of
resilience of those pushing back against malign forces.

We publish The Year in Hate and Extremism annually to detail the scope
of activities and dangers posed posed to our communities and our
democracy by hate and antigovernment extremist groups, movements,
and networks across the United States.
Here are the top findings you need to know:
* 1,225 active hate and antigovernment extremist groups were
documented across the U.S. in 2022.
* In the aftermath of Trump's 2020 election loss and the
deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, extremist
groups shifted their tactics to organizing locally and pursuing
their agenda in venues where it is easier to gain power.
* Schools were a particularly notable battleground.
* The fear of "white extinction," which was once
central to just the white nationalist movement, has been
alarmingly mainstreamed. The "great replacement"
conspiracy theory is a notion that is inherently white
supremacist and antisemitic, a false narrative that asserts that
non-white immigrants are systematically replacing white people.
This lie is being widely perpetuated in media and political
narratives.
