This year marks the third year Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday, but more than 150 years since Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 to read Order No. 3, which affirmed and enforced the end of slavery in all Confederate states, two months after General Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy surrendered at Appomattox and more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation.
