JOHN,
The American people deserve a Supreme Court we can trust to be fair and uphold justice for all.
But the illegitimate, corrupt, far-right majority on the Supreme Court continues to target our rights and undermine our democracy. This month, we expect court rulings on issues ranging from Indigenous rights and sovereignty to the very future of our democracy―both of which are under attack.
Remember, in 2016 and 2020 Mitch McConnell stole two Supreme Court seats―first blocking hearings on President Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland, claiming in an election year that voters should decide, then breaking his own made up rule four years later, confirming a Trump nominee just days before the 2020 presidential election.
But, there’s something we can do about it.
Nowhere in our Constitution does it state the number of justices who should sit on the bench. And, in fact, Congress has both shrunk and expanded the court multiple times over the years, going as high as 10 justices at one point.
Right now, the Supreme Court is in the midst of disturbing ethics scandals involving Justices Thomas, Roberts, and Gorsuch. The American people deserve a court that represents our values of justice and equity, not a court stolen by the right-wing, ripe with conflicts of interest.
Please sign on in support of expanding the Supreme Court and stop the illegitimate Supreme Court from undermining our democracy and our rights.
I spoke at a rally last month in Detroit in support of the Just Majority Coalition’s push for much-needed court reforms, such as expanding the number of Justices to restore balance to what has become an openly partisan, right-wing institution.
When the court is not acting in the American people’s best interests, it’s up to us to change the court.
Thank you for taking action today.
In solidarity,
Rashida
