Happy Pride Month, Johh!
This month is an incredibly special time for us to come together and celebrate the vibrant and diverse LGBTQ+ community. It's a moment to reflect on the progress we've made in our country's journey towards equality and, more importantly, to recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight for equal rights.
I firmly believe every single person deserves the opportunity to live their truth boldly and unapologetically. Our nation was built on the fundamental principle that all individuals are created equal. Sadly, our government hasn't always lived up to this ideal, but now, it's our duty to stand up and defend equality for ALL Americans.
Today, people can still lose their homes, face eviction from their workplaces, endure bullying in schools, and even experience violence or worse all because of who they are and who they love. In the past year alone, we've witnessed an alarming rise in vicious campaigns aimed at undermining and attacking the expression and lives of LGBTQ+ individuals.
From outrageous drag bans to the criminalization of vital transgender healthcare, and even the horrifying massacre in Colorado Springs, the queer community is confronting an increasingly hostile and dangerous environment.
We as a country cannot continue to condone the harmful culture of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. Change is possible, Johh. For years, our very own Colorado was known as the "hate state" due an amendment that enshrined discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. But thanks to the tireless work of activists and leaders for justice, our state made progress.
As one of the founding members of the LGBT Equality Caucus in Congress, I deeply believe that no one in the United States should be denied their basic rights simply for being their authentic selves.
Even though the work for equality isn't over yet, I am proud to continue fighting for a better future.
Thank you,
Diana
