Friend,

The rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (also known as AI) has put us on the verge of a new era.

As its own creators are stating publicly with real concern, if AI is not properly regulated, it poses great risks to our society. It is imperative that we demystify these new technologies and put safeguards in place to protect all of us from the very real potential for dangerous abuse.

That’s why I recently held a subcommittee hearing focused on this very topic and joined MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss the scary prospects posed by AI.

Technologies that would have been the stuff of science fiction in the past are now becoming reality. To help demonstrate that point, I did something that had never been done before in a United States Senate hearing: I had AI voice cloning software deliver part of my opening remarks.

And alarmingly, if you closed your eyes, you couldn’t have told that you were listening to a voice clone of me – a voice clone playing remarks that were actually written by an AI technology known as ChatGPT. It was eerie – even creepy. And it was a powerful demonstration of how easy it is for AI technologies both to pose as real people and to present information that may, or may not, be truthful.

Hundreds of experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence have issued a forceful warning that unchecked AI technologies could pose existential risks to humanity, writing in a new open letter: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

Our elections are at risk. Millions of jobs are at risk. The very notion of what’s true is at risk. Humanity’s safety is at risk. We need to know how these black boxes of AI work, and we need to discuss and define limitations on use.

That’s why I’m leading the charge to put safeguards in place on AI – and I hope you will join me in that effort. If you’re with me, I’m asking you to speak out and demand accountability. I’m hoping for 500 responses to our new poll before midnight tonight:

Should we create rules and regulations on AI to protect jobs and prevent the spread of disinformation?
