In the U.S., people facing detention and deportation do not automatically get a publicly funded attorney. If they can’t afford to hire a lawyer, they have no choice but to navigate the notoriously complicated and ever-changing labyrinth of immigration law alone.
That’s why Vera and our partners have launched a campaign for the Fairness to Freedom Act, pushing for legislation that establishes a universal right to federally funded legal representation for anyone facing deportation who can’t afford it.
