** Around the country and the globe

One of the rotten fruits of our hyper-individualistic culture seems to be a sort of solipsistic self-obsession: I care about my family and my job and my well-being. And of course I need to care about those things... but it’s nice to have my eyes lifted to the concerns of the Other. To know about the struggles, courage, desperation, and hope of those in the margins both near and abroad.
Some of the recent articles in the Century have done that for me. Marc Roscoe Loustau describes the fight against ([link removed]) autocratic rule in Hungary. John P. Burgess explains a religious showdown ([link removed]) happening right now in Ukraine. Closer to home, Peter W. Marty reflects on economic policy ([link removed]) here in the US.
