A focus on immigration in the heartland

From face-to-face training in North Macedonia to Beat Academy ([link removed]) webinars, PolitiFact’s Jon Greenberg says he finds that the best learning comes through the interweaving of hands-on practice and higher-level themes. Local, regional and national reporters covering immigration can drill down during the next sessions in Beat Academy ([link removed]) .
“We start with a focus on immigration in the heartland,” Greenberg said. “The southern border gets most of the ink, but a lot of our dysfunctional immigration system plays out thousands of miles to the north.”
He’s co-teaching with Zita Arocha, University of Texas El Paso professor emeritus, who’s also the architect of the newly updated Poynter online course, Understanding U.S. Immigration From the Border to the Heartland ([link removed]) .
Immigration is woven into the fabric of American society. It’s also complex, politically polarized and ever-evolving. That’s why this training comes at a valuable time.
In the first of two Beat Academy ([link removed]) sessions (June 8 at 1 p.m. Eastern), attendees will examine patterns, pathways and communities beyond the southern border; learn census and documentation tools they can use to help tell stories in their communities; and examine the roles that jobs and families play in these stories.
“The classic story is that new arrivals go to places where they know people,” Greenberg said.
That results in, for one, sizable Latino communities throughout the country. Such communities both stimulate local economies and create friction, as public services are challenged. “Not a new phenomenon, but a growing one,” Greenberg said.
In the second session (June 15, 1 p.m. Eastern), attendees will get a snapshot of where immigration proposals stand at the federal level. From the end of Title 42 to the Biden administration's push for adding processing centers throughout Central and South America, we'll fill you in on everything you need to know about the latest legislative ideas and actions.
