Every college graduate has a story, but no one has Vida Opoku’s story. Born and raised in a small village in Ghana, Vida was forced into an abusive marriage at a very young age in order to settle a family medical debt. After giving birth to a son, After giving birth to a son, she decided to flee her country. With the help of an aunt, Vida embarked on an odyssey in search for safety through nine different countries by foot, horseback, and wooden boat until she reached the United States. While Vida was held in government custody, the Young Center was appointed as her Child Advocate to ensure she would not be returned to danger.
Vida is is one of many people who inspire our celebration of Immigrant Heritage Month and the resilience and contributions of those who arrive in the United States fleeing violence. She is one of thousands of children and youth we have accompanied as they pursue their dreams.
