The spring membership & redistribution pledge drive has wrapped! As a member of the RG staff for over three years and a dues-paying member for over five years, I love sharing RG's work with my community. Whether on the basketball court, at a wedding, or a community event, I am always excited to discuss the power and potential of our work.
There are many ways to tell our story—though it’s often reduced to supporting wealthy young people with their giving—it's important that we do so in a way that recognizes the collective power and potential of our work.
At its core, RG is
- an ambitious political project to transform ourselves and our families in service of transforming our relationships, and, ultimately, our cultural, political, and economic systems.
-
a laboratory where we experiment and practice what it means to be accountable to each other, to our shared political visions, and to poor and working-class people and movements.
-
an intervention in how wealthy people and funders participate in movements for justice and liberation, providing us opportunities to leverage our financial resources, people power, and positional power to win campaigns, build solidarity economies, and co-create a just and liberatory future for all.
These are the stories that call to me. They’ve led me to move $15-$18k a year to movements (compared to $2k when I was introduced to RG), contribute 10% of my overall giving as membership dues each year to RG, and participate in organizing and campaigns to transform our current systems and build new ones.
So much happened during this year’s spring drive, which ended on May 31! Of course, it’s not too late to sign the redistribution pledge or to move 5-10% of your overall giving as membership dues to RG.
While our work continues, it’s also key to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate our efforts thus far this year. Huge shout out to everybody who plugged into this year’s spring drive—especially people who anchored things locally! As a collective body, RGers pledged over $100M in wealth redistribution to social movements so far this year, and also pledged to divest $4M from Wall St!
Throughout the Drive, across RG, chapters worked hard to lift up each other’s leadership, create community touchpoints, and build power towards wealth redistribution. It's been incredible to see the creativity and dedication of our members. RG Michigan hosted a transformative fundraising training and a pop-up bagel brunch fundraiser for the Transforming Power Fund! RG NYC hosted a money moving cafe, the Bay Area chapter scaffolded a three-part redistribution campaign to move local campaign partner goals forward alongside the timeline of the Drive, Twin Cities gathered for some in-person money coworking, and so much more.
Drives are times for us as a membership organization to explicitly center how we mobilize resources in a way that is unique to RG, and that invites members to rededicate to RG as a political home that needs funding, by supporting ongoing base-building and leadership development. So if you haven’t yet, become a dues-paying member at 5-10% of your overall giving or renew your membership if you haven’t yet.
With care and appreciation,
