Happy Pride Month, John!
This month, we celebrate all our LGBTQ+ friends, family, neighbors, and those whose shoulders stand on.
Our congressional district, our state, our country, our world would be a dimmer place without LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians like…
- Civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, who organized the 1963 March on Washington
- Peter Staley, an influential member of ACT UP and the fight to end the AIDS pandemic
- Fashion designer Will Smith, who was regarded as one of the most successful Black fashion designers when he died in 1987
- Actors Billy Porter, Jonathan Groff, and Hari Nef who have represented the LGBTQ+ community on our screens and stages
- Iconic jazz singers Billie Holiday and Carmen McRae
- Athletes Adam Rippon – an Olympic figure skater – and NFL player Carl Paul Nasib
As we celebrate the beautiful diversity of our LGBTQ+ community, I’m also thinking about the rise in harassment of LGBTQ+ students in our schools… Pride flags ripped down from buildings… school boards erasing queer stories and books… and politicians restricting gender-affirming care and criminalizing drag performances.
There is no place for homophobia, transphobia, or any form of hatred in Pennsylvania. In Congress, I will fight so that all of us – no matter who we love or how we identify – can be safe and thrive. And you’ll never have to guess where I stand in the fight for equal rights and freedom.
I hope you are proud today and every day.
— Ashley
