Dear John,

My vote on the debt ceiling deal

Last week, I voted against the debt ceiling agreement.

While I appreciate the hard work of Speaker McCarthy and Republican negotiators to force President Biden to the table and get Democrat concessions, I could not support the agreement, which allows unlimited borrowing over the next two years and does not take long-term steps to address our debt crisis.

Illinois families who work hard must meet budgets and spend money within their means, and it is long past time that the federal government do the same. That's why, I joined House Republicans to responsibly raise the debt limit and pass the Limit, Save, Grow Act last month, legislation to significantly reform Washington's spending addiction.

As I've listened to residents of central and northwestern Illinois this past month, it is clear that 16th District constituents do not want unlimited COVID-19 level deficit spending that continues to kick the can down the road and places the burden on our children and grandchildren.

Therefore, I opposed the legislation.

I joined my friend Jeanne Ives to discuss my vote and our work in Congress. Watch our discussion here.

Advocating for Illinois agriculture

Image

Ag is the #1 industry in Illinois and vital to the 16th District. I hosted our first IL16 Ag Advisory Committee meeting to hear from farmers and the ag community about issues impacting them. As Congress works on the Farm Bill, trade policy, and biofuels issues, I will continue to engage on our ag community in the 16th District.

Thank you to Marquis Energy for hosting us last week for a visit at the Hennepin plant. Ethanol and biofuels are key economic drivers for our region and I will continue to advocate for the RFS and increased market access for biofuels.

Opening a new office in Rockford

It was great to be in Rockford last week to open our new office in Winnebago County with State Senator Dave Syverson! The IL16 Constituent Service Office will provide northern Illinois with a key resource to get help with the federal government and support our outreach efforts.

Thanks to everyone who came out!

I joined Greta Van Susteren on Newsmax last week to discuss our efforts on the House Intelligence Committee to reform FISA and Section 702. FISA and Section 702 are vital national security tools, but Americans have lost faith because of egregious abuses by the FBI and IC. We are looking at serious reforms to protect the civil liberties of Americans.

Visiting with 16th District constituents

I had a great visit at the new Amazon Fulfillment Center in Pekin last week. They just hit their millionth package delivered in only 100 days of being open. The fulfillment center has been a strong economic force in the IL16 and I appreciate the work they do to support the community.

I spoke to a great crowd at the East Peoria Chamber’s Eggs & Issues breakfast! I appreciate all the work the Chamber does in the community to support small businesses. Small businesses strengthen our communities and I will continue to advocate for pro growth policies that allow them to thrive.

Thank you to Chamber President Rick Swan and John Kahl Mayor of East Peoria!

It was great to be back in Peoria to speak with the Peoria North Rotary! I provided a Washington update and discussed our work in Congress to strengthen the economy and put a check on the Biden Administration.

Thanks for having me!

I visited and toured the Carle Eureka Hospital last week! We had a good discussion about issues they are facing and nursing shortages. Carle Eureka Hospital is vital to the surrounding area, particularly our rural and underserved communities, and I appreciate their work.

As always, thanks for subscribing to my newsletter!

Sincerely,
