Do you know how close we came to a book ban in Connecticut? Right-wing activists in Newtown nearly banned two novels with LGBTQ+ themes from its high school library — during Pride Month, no less.

It can happen here. The national GOP is driving an unrelenting assault on free speech across America, banning books and suppressing LGBTQ+ voices. If their efforts can even reach progressive Connecticut, no community is immune.

A ban was averted in Newtown, thanks to the votes of Democrats, the unexpected resignation of two Board Republicans, and the power of Newtown residents who showed up and spoke out for “fREADom.” But students’ ability to access books shouldn’t hinge on the whims of one or two officials.

With the GOP currently controlling 58% of our local governments, free speech and LGBTQ+ rights remain in serious jeopardy.
