Big Nottingham Spring Clean weekend success!

clean champions

Thank you to the hundreds of Clean Champions and our own staff who took part in dozens of clean-up and litter-picking events around the city at the weekend during the first-ever Big Nottingham Spring Clean weekend.

So far in June, more than 100 bags of rubbish have been collected – what an amazing effort – a huge thanks to everyone who took part.

If you’re interested in becoming a Clean Champion in your local area, perhaps with a friend or family member, sign up to get your free litter-picking kit here: www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/cleanchampions [ [link removed] ]

And saying thank you to all those who volunteer their time…

big spring clean

We celebrated all our amazing volunteers this weekend at Nottingham Arboretum. The Volunteer Celebration Event provided an opportunity for people to connect with others, share their experiences and discover other volunteering opportunities in the area.

The event was a way to express our gratitude for their valuable work across all City Council services, which includes:

* Nottingham Green Guardians who help to maintain and improve our green spaces from caring for nature reserves to planting more than 13,000 trees in the past year
* Nottingham Clean Champions who help to keep our streets free of litter

* Nottingham Museums Service volunteers who help with the smooth running of Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, Newstead Abbey, Brewhouse Yard and the soon-to-reopen Nottingham Castle
* Nottingham Libraries service volunteers who help children with their homework, deliver books to those who can’t travel to libraries and teach new skills to all, as well as all the amazing people who volunteer in any way in Nottingham to improve our city.

Help end plastic pollution this World Environment Day

world environment day

Today is World Environment Day. Nottingham is making fantastic progress towards improving the environment through our work to become a carbon-neutral city by 2028, but there is lots still to be done.

This year’s theme is "Beat Plastic Pollution", so we want to use today as a reminder that people’s actions to tackle plastic pollution really matters. One million plastic bottles are bought every minute and up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year.

While plastic has many helpful uses, we have a problem with single-use plastic that is used once then thrown away. About 400 million tonnes of plastic waste is produced each year, so what can we do to beat plastic pollution?

* Join a litter pick: plastic on the streets can end up in our rivers and oceans, so get involved with Nottingham Clean Champions [ [link removed] ] (see above) to help keep our streets tidy;

* Shop sustainably: try to choose food with no plastic packaging, take reusable bags to the shops with you, and go to zero-waste shops to refill your own containers;
* Live a zero-waste lifestyle: invest in plastic-free products like water bottles, beeswax wraps, and reusable coffee cups – many coffee shops will give you a discount for bringing your own cup too;
* Choose plastic-free products: personal care products are a major source of microplastics which get washed into the oceans straight from our bathrooms. Try products like shampoo bars and plastic-free deodorant;
* Be a recycling hero in Nottingham: make sure you’re putting the right items into your recycling bin, and if you’re in doubt, leave it out. Find out more about recycling right in Nottingham [ [link removed] ].

Indian train disaster

I was shocked and devastated to see the news coming from India on Friday of the train crash in Odisha. The scale of the disaster has become clear over the past couple of days with the sheer number of people either killed or seriously injured.

My thoughts are not only with those caught up in the aftermath of this tragedy, but also members of our Indian community here in Nottingham. We’ll support them in any way we can during this extremely difficult time.
