Friend, last month I let you know about the introduction of the RESTORE Act in Congress. It would repeal the lifetime ban on people with felony drug convictions from accessing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP or food stamps.
A drug conviction should never be the basis to deny a person their most basic needs. Yet Congress has had this cruel ban in place for decades. Repealing it is one of our main goals this year. We plan to do it by passing the RESTORE Act within the Farm Bill which is being negotiated right now.
Tell your Members of Congress to support the RESTORE Act today.
House Members have until this Friday, June 9, to weigh in on their priorities for the Farm Bill. And we need your voice to ensure they include the RESTORE Act.
Help us do it by making a quick phone call at (202) 224-3121 to get connected to your House Representative’s office. And you can say: As a constituent, I’m calling to urge my Representative to cosponsor the RESTORE Act (H.R. 3479) and include it in the Farm Bill. This bill would repeal the cruel and counterproductive ban on SNAP benefits for people with felony drug convictions. This policy undermines public safety because denying access to basic food assistance can disrupt effective reentry into the community. The ban also makes it harder for families who are already struggling to put food on the table. Access to SNAP provides crucial support to families. And it’s proven to help formerly incarcerated people transition back into society. That’s why I hope you will support the RESTORE Act and pass it within the Farm Bill. Thank you.
And if you use Twitter, you can directly contact your Representative there too. If you don’t know who your Rep is, find out here. Then, find their Twitter handle here and include it in your tweet along with #PassRestoreAct. We encourage you to personalize your message, but here are some sample tweets you can use as a guide:
- No one should be denied basic needs like food. It’s time to end the ban on SNAP for people with drug convictions. [insert Member Twitter handle] please support and #PassRestoreAct in the #FarmBill to repeal this cruel ban.
- Access to food stamps provides crucial support to families. The SNAP ban on people with drug convictions is cruel and counterproductive. [insert Member Twitter handle] please repeal this ban: support and #PassRestoreAct in the #FarmBill.
Denying people and their families access to food deprives them of the support they need to remain healthy and survive. Please help us take a step forward to change that by making your voice heard by June 9.
Sincerely,
Hanna Sharif-Kazemi
