New Video Featuring Gold Star Mother Sandy Terwiske
This year, my guest to the State of the Union was Sandy Terwiske, a Gold Star mother from Japer, Indiana. I first met Sandy in 2012 when I was her Congressman. She came to talk to me about her son, Lance Corporal Alec Terwiske, who was killed in action that September by an improvised explosive device while serving as a Marine in Afghanistan. Since then, I have worn a bracelet in honor of Alec. I promised Sandy that when I wear it I will remember Alec, and all of the fallen and their sacrifices. During last year’s State of the Union, I gave President Trump one of Alec’s bracelets. This year, I was honored to have Sandy attend the President’s speech as my guest. We sat down to discuss Alec and the importance of honoring Gold Star families. Click here or the image below to watch.

State of the Union Reaction
Last week, President Trump delivered an optimistic message about the great successes we have achieved over the last three years and the work that remains in order to keep America strong.
Spurred by lower taxes, fewer regulations, and emerging trade deals, we are poised to continue this period of economic growth. More people are working than ever, and this economic surge is creating new opportunities for people of every background. It is critical that we continue, and build upon, this momentum.
President Trump also outlined the work that remains to support working families, including lowering the cost of health care and prescription drug prices. I will continue working with the President and my colleagues in Congress to tackle these challenges.
The address provided a clear contrast between the Republican policies that are working for American families and the socialist policies being championed by national Democrats on the far left, which would lead to higher taxes, fewer jobs, and less freedom.
It’s clear that Republicans offer a better path forward for a stronger, safer, and more prosperous America, and I look forward to continue working with President Trump on behalf of Hoosiers and all Americans.
Tackling the Truck Driver Shortage
I’ve heard from truck drivers and businesses across Indiana about the impact of our nation’s truck driver shortage. Last week, I had the opportunity to speak with trucking industry experts on how my DRIVE-Safe Act will address the driver shortage, create jobs for young Hoosiers, and increase safety on our roads. Constituent Spotlight: 102-Year-Old Hoosier Veteran
After more than 56 years at the Department of Natural Resources, Hoosier Bob Vollmer has finally retired at 102 years old. This World War II veteran has surveyed significant swaths of Indiana’s countryside and his service will benefit our state for years to come. I wish him fair winds and following seas as he moves into the next chapter of his life. Learn more about Bob’s inspiring story in WTHR’s article: “At 102 years old, state worker finally ready to retire”.
USMCA Signed into Law
Now that President Trump has signed the USMCA Implementation Act into law, Hoosiers have the certainty needed to grow businesses, create jobs, and increase exports. Over 60,000 manufacturing jobs in Indiana are directly tied to trade with our closest neighbors, and our 94,000 farmers will be able to increase exports by $2.2 billion with this historic agreement. I look forward to seeing USMCA fully implemented over the coming months.
The USMCA will not only modernize the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) but also support freer markets, fairer trade, and robust economic growth in North America.
