Last week, the DC Council was set to vote on legislation that would cap rent increases for rent-stabilized tenants. However, they failed to come to consensus on procedural issues and postponed the vote, leaving tenants in another week of uncertainty about how much rents will spike.
Legislation to cap rents is up for a vote again tomorrow. This time, we need Council to act. Rent stabilized tenants are still struggling to catch up from pandemic-induced financial difficulties, and since May 1, tenants have faced increases of up to 8.9%. That's the highest rent increase since the beginning of the rent stabilization program in DC.
Today, we are asking tenants and advocates to call the Council and urge them to vote in favor of legislation to cap increases at 10% over the next two years. DC government needs to take action to keep tenants in their homes and stop displacement.
Call the DC Council TODAY and say: Cap Rent Hikes at 10% over two years!
