We’re calling on drug companies to ensure patients have access to lifesaving care

Friend,
The past few decades have seen enormous progress when it comes to treating and preventing HIV. But every day, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) sees how HIV-positive or at-risk patients in low-and middle-income countries still face barriers to accessing comprehensive care and treatment.
Currently, the pharmaceutical company ViiV is the only drug manufacturer of the HIV prevention medicine, long-acting cabotegravir (CAB-LA), that exists. With a generic version of this drug years away, ViiV has not done nearly enough to ensure patients have access to this lifesaving medication, regardless of their income.
Knowing ViiV’s distribution strategy will allow our teams to better advocate for access for people who need it most. ViiV’s CAB-LA supply strategy is irresponsible and does not consider urgent health needs.
Our fight against HIV is far from over.
1.5 million people were newly infected with HIV in 2020 and 500 children are newly infected every day. MSF programs are fighting to prevent the spread of this disease on multiple fronts: from HIV testing that includes pre-and post-test counseling, treatment, prevention and education, and provision of antiretroviral drugs for people as clinically indicated.
Access to pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is essential to prevent people from contracting HIV. The drug produced by ViiV is currently the most effective form of PrEP for people who are at high risk of contracting HIV, and it only needs to be injected every two months, rather than taken as a pill every day.
