America is a rich country. It also is a country in the grip of one culture war issue after another. The problem with our current cultural and political obsessions, our diseases of the rich, is not that they are unimportant. The problem is that we treat relatively minor complaints about our lifestyle, and all too often our emotional upset at somebody else’s lifestyle, as if they are life-and-death issues. They’re not and we should focus on other, more important things.
