The Trump Administration announced a big policy change last week that could change caregiving for millions of families.

Just last week, administration officials announced a change to Medicaid funding that would allow states to accept "block grants" of funding and reduce the size of their Medicaid programs. This means people will lose vital health care access, and there would be cuts to the only federal program that provides Long-Term Services and Supports for families who need it.

This change was announced during a busy news cycle, in the hopes that it would go unnoticed. But people noticed. On Thursday, the House passed a Resolution condemning the change. Now it's up to the Senate to take action.

This change was written in the complicated language of the federal bureaucracy, and is deliberately designed to be hard to figure out. But here's what's going on.

Under this new rule, states will be able to accept a smaller amount of federal money for their Medicaid programs, instead of covering everyone who qualifies. This amount will grow with inflation, but at a slower rate than medical spending, so states will either be faced with the choice to cut benefits or limit eligibility. Either way, it could leave countless caregiving families without the only Long-Term Supports and Services coverage they can access.

This change to Medicaid came just weeks after an announcement about changes to Social Security Disability that would require people to re-prove their disability every two years, navigating hundreds or even thousands of pages of paperwork to prove that their situation hasn't changed.

All of these changes mean that fewer people will have access to the services and programs they desperately need.

There are so many distractions in Washington these days that it's possible that our members of Congress don't even know about these changes. We need to let them know we're watching and that we won't accept what's happening. We can't simply stay quiet while our government makes life harder for caregiving families.
