Happy Pride Month, friend.
Pride has taken on a new meaning for me this year. It's my first as a member of Congress, and as the first openly gay federal representative elected in Illinois state history!
I'm an example of the progress that's been made on LGBTQ rights. But the truth is, it wasn't long ago that I was just a gay kid named Eric who never really believed I'd be accepted as a TV meteorologist -- let alone as a member of Congress.

After my first job as meteorologist in East Texas, I experienced discrimination and was ultimately pushed out of my job for being gay. Management was clear:
“We can’t have a gay meteorologist at channel 7, Eric.”

The suits have gotten an upgrade since my Texas days...
It was a tough time, but after job searching and soul searching, I got the opportunity of a lifetime -- to serve my hometown of Rockford, Illinois -- where I could be my true, proud self. The rest, as they say, is history.
So for those struggling this Pride Month, know that there’s hope. Whether it's your 10th year openly celebrating, your first, or maybe you're not ready to just yet -- know that you are loved and that I'm proud of you.
Thanks for your time and support, and Happy Pride Month! 🌈
