John, 104 years ago today, Congress passed the 19th Amendment, finally beginning the process of ratification to correct one of the greatest injustices in our nation’s history and give women the right to vote.

Yet not all women enjoyed this right equally, despite the vital role Black, Indigenous and other women of color played in winning it.

Poll taxes, literacy tests, grandfather clauses disenfranchising the descendants of the formerly enslaved, months-long voter registration deadlines, and every other tool of voter suppression available was applied to keep Black, Indigenous and other women of color from exercising their newfound right to vote.

We have made significant progress, but the fight for EVERYONE’S suffrage continues today. Pitch in $10 now to help fund our work to register historically disenfranchised communities, including and especially women of color, and make the lasting expansion of the electorate we need to win this fight once and for all. →

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
