Researchers took a look at more than 70,000 species across the globe, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects to determine the size of their populations over time.
John, of the species they analyzed, they found that 48 percent are facing a steady decline.
It’s not hard to see why, either. Humans are clearing out critical ecosystems to make way for farms, towns, cities and roads, and the growing climate crisis is only making our planet more uninhabitable for these declining species.
Now, scientists are sounding the alarm for a sixth mass extinction event — and if we don’t take aggressive action to reverse this alarming trend, we could see a huge erasure of some of our most beloved creatures.
We can’t continue putting such extreme pressure on our wildlife populations, John. We’ve seen so many positive stories of species coming back from the brink of extinction before, so we know we have the power to halt this horrible trend in its tracks — but only if we take swift and collective action now.
Our SEEC Members are fighting the good fight in Washington to protect the lands that these vulnerable populations call home, and they’re working every day to enact measures that will proactively protect our most at-risk species from extinction. But we know we need more support on the ground to get these bills signed into law.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
