Last month, we reached out with an urgent update about the latest phase of the GOP’s attack on voting rights. Here’s where things stand now (there’s good news and bad news):

First, the good news: According to the Washington Post, “While there are ongoing efforts to make it more difficult to vote in many Republican-controlled states, a research group found there has also been a quiet countermovement to expand access to voting across the country.”

This is a direct result of the movement for fair maps! Our movement’s work to secure fair maps and elect Democracy Defenders in places like Maryland, Michigan, and Minnesota made it possible for Democrats to win full control of those states for the first time in years. Now, those states are working to expand voting rights.

Now, the bad news: While we’re still awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan, experts have issued grim predictions. According to FiveThirtyEight, “The Supreme Court Is On The Verge Of Killing The Voting Rights Act.”

Republicans aren’t slowing down in their efforts to undermine our democracy, John, so we can’t slow down in our efforts to protect and strengthen it. As President Obama said recently, “Our democracy is resilient as long as we stay engaged and active.”
