ACTION SPOTLIGHT
Tell the Forest Service to Protect Mature
Forests and Trees to Fight the Climate Crisis
We need forests to fight the climate
crisis. Mature trees store and absorb vast amounts of carbon
pollution, as well as provide the public with clean drinking
water, habitat for imperiled wildlife, and world-class
recreation. Yet these old-growth forests on federal lands and
trees are threatened by on-going logging.
When mature trees are cut down and processed, much of their
stored carbon is rapidly released — and recapturing carbon
through forest regrowth takes decades or even centuries. But
climate change is upon us now — we don't have time to regrow
forests.
We need strong, permanent protections for mature forests and
trees to mitigate climate change and to maintain their natural
benefits for generations to come.
Tell the Forest Service to fulfill the promise of President
Biden's executive order by creating strong, permanent protections
for mature forests and trees on federal lands. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Tell EPA: Cut Carbon Pollution from Power
Plants to Tackle the Climate Crisis
The Biden administration's EPA recently
proposed standards that would significantly cut climate-busting
carbon emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants. Existing
fossil power plants currently face NO federal limits on their
carbon pollution they emit, so EPA's proposed standards are
urgently needed.
The new proposed standards would set limits on power plants'
carbon pollution, and then give states and power companies the
flexibility to clean up dirty fossil plants, reduce their use, or
retire them in favor of cleaner power from renewable energy.
Cleaning up electricity production is
critical: power plants that burn coal and gas are responsible for
one-third of U.S. carbon emissions. EPA should implement the
strongest possible carbon pollution standards, and implement them
quickly, to confront the mounting dangers of the worsening
climate crisis and save lives.
Urge EPA to cut carbon pollution and tackle the climate crisis by
finalizing the most ambitious carbon limits possible. ( [link removed] )

BIG WINS
* Greater Energy Equity Ahead, in both
Maryland and Virginia: Thanks to new laws in each state, Maryland
and Virginia will deliver improved efficiency programs to
low-income customers, elderly residents, people with
disabilities, and veterans. These new laws, once implemented,
pave the way for other states across the country to address
energy burdens and energy efficiency for low-income families.

* Expert Blog: Pollinators Notch Big Wins in Minnesota: In a
historic 2023 legislative session, Minnesota reined in pesticide
use, increased pollinator habitat, and built momentum toward
additional protections. Minnesota has made significant strides to
make the state a safer place for pollinators — but there's still
more to be done. Read more > ( [link removed] )
ACTION ROUNDUP
* Demand ConocoPhillips Stop Arctic
Drilling: ( [link removed] ) ConocoPhillips' Willow oil drilling project in the western
Arctic will add hundreds of millions of metric tons of carbon
pollution to our atmosphere. These jaw-dropping emissions are
virtually guaranteed to accelerate the climate crisis. Tell CEO
Ryan Lance to stop the massive Willow oil drilling project and
end irresponsible Arctic drilling. Take action > ( [link removed] )
* Tell BOEM: Stop Selling Off Our Oceans to the Oil and Gas
Industry: ( [link removed] ) Oil and gas development creates countless risks — from oil
spills to dangerous noise and ship traffic. It's also driving
climate change. BOEM must use its authority to reject "business
as usual" oil leasing and stop auctioning off our oceans at the
cost of our climate, ecosystems, and communities — before it's
too late. Take action > ( [link removed] )
* Protect Health and Fight Climate Change with Cleaner Vehicles:
( [link removed] ) Transportation is the largest source of climate pollution in
the U.S. and is also a major source of other harmful pollutants
that significantly impact public health. New standards would help
combat the climate crisis, protect communities, and speed the
transition to all new vehicle sales being zero-emission by 2035.
