State legislatures are the single most important way to change our politics -- and our policies. Unfortunately, they’re also the single most forgotten in progressive circles.
In North Carolina, that has meant Republicans have had a majority in both houses for nearly a decade, using it to enact an extremist agenda that disenfranchises voters and discriminates against vulnerable populations.
If we don’t do something about it, Republicans will continue to enact the same kinds of laws -- like the most comprehensive voter suppression package in the country, the notorious H.B.2 “bathroom bill”, and a regressive tax code that hurts poor families (while refusing to expand Medicaid). They’ve also vetoed the Democratic Governor’s budget and blocked efforts to implement a living wage and reduce mass incarceration.
We can put a stop to this. Every seat in the State Assembly is up for re-election in 2020. In the House, we only need to flip five seats to achieve a tie or six to win. In the Senate, that number is even lower -- four to tie or five to win.
But we need your help.
We're working closely with campaigns on the ground to place Academy grads directly on campaigns that are most likely to win but need more support to see victory on Election Day.
