"Whether we're talking about gender inequality, or racism, or queer rights, or indigenous rights, or animal rights, we're talking about the fight against injustice."
– Joaquin Phoenix
Last night, Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix urged the world to act now for the climate. His acceptance speeches during awards season have been inspiring calls to action: all of us have a role to play in building a more just and sustainable world.
Phoenix's newest film, Guardians of Life, was made in partnership with Amazon Watch and Extinction Rebellion specifically to highlight the key role of indigenous people as the best protectors and stewards of the Amazon rainforest. He was joined by an array of socially-conscious stars, including Rosario Dawson, Matthew Modine, Q'orianka Kilcher, Oona Chaplin, Adria Arjona, and Albert Hammond, Jr. of The Strokes.
This film is part of a worldwide cultural shift and an upsurge of grassroots support for climate justice. Actors like Joaquin Phoenix know that we're facing down unprecedented destruction — not just of the Amazon but of Mother Earth herself.
More and more people are standing up for climate justice every day, and there is hope in this blossoming movement. Let's answer Joaquin's call to stand in solidarity with indigenous people and fight injustice. They shouldn't have to defend our planet alone – we must all be Guardians of Life.
