Dear Progressive Reader,

June is Pride Month, and the new issue of The Progressive features numerous articles and interviews that address both LGBTQ+ pride, and the current threats and legislative attacks against members of the LGBTQ+ community. In the opening “Comment” in the issue, U.S. Representative Mark Pocan writes ([link removed]) , “We have much to celebrate in our history already, but still more to continue fighting for. I look forward to the day when bigotry and anti-equality agendas are confined to the dustbin of history—or, perhaps, written about in a display at the National Museum of American LGBTQ+ History and Culture. Until then, we must keep fighting against hatred and bigotry, and for a better future. That’s what Pride is all about.”

In a conversation I had with Montana Representative Zooey Zephyr, she described the efforts by members of the Montana State Legislature to silence her, and disenfranchise the voters who elected her with an overwhelming majority. “What we see is the way in which those in power, particularly those on the far right, are willing to utilize the tools of the system they’ve gained power over to force silence. It’s not enough to get the bills through. They are trying to squash dissent itself,” Zephyr tells me ([link removed]) . “I spoke directly to real harm that happens to my community, and I will not apologize.” And Brynn Tannehill chronicles the more than 500 anti-transgender bills that have been introduced across the country in just the past year. “Mainstream conservatives are no longer hiding their desire to eliminate ‘transgenderism.’ Conservative lawmakers in red states have made this their top legislative priority,” she notes (http

Elsewhere on our website this week, Michaela Brant reports ([link removed]) on the new mayor of Chicago, Illinois, Brandon Johnson, an advocate of public education; Adam Szetela attends a concert by the radical British band Enter Shikari and speaks with ([link removed]) lead singer Rou Reynolds; Mike Ervin talks about ([link removed]) attempts to ban the use of electrical shock devices; and Sudip Bhattacharya describes the threats to Philadelphia’s vibrant Chinatown where a march and rally are planned for June 10 to oppose a new stadium. “Our responsibility is not to only save Chinatown,” one activist tells him ([link removed]) . “Our responsibility is to educate people about what’s happening
all over the world as a result of these forces.”

In a few weeks, the annual ([link removed]) Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s “Energy Fair” will take place in Custer, Wisconsin. On June 23, The Progressive will be there conducting one of our Op-Ed writing workshops ([link removed]) , and Amy Goodman ([link removed]) of DemocracyNow! will be on hand as a keynote speaker at the event.
