Gov. Justice issues statement on death of Trooper Cory Maynard; lowers flags to half-staff
|
|
Gov. Jim Justice issued the following statement following the death of Trooper Cory Maynard:
“I am absolutely heartbroken tonight to report that Sergeant Cory Maynard of the West Virginia State Police was fatally wounded in an incident this afternoon near Matewan.
“Cathy and I share our deepest sympathies and our heartfelt prayers to all of Trooper Maynard’s loved ones and the entire law enforcement community of West Virginia for this tragic loss tonight.
“The brave men and women of law enforcement, and all first responders who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, are an inspiration to us all. I again ask all West Virginians to join Cathy and I in embracing Trooper Maynard’s family, loved ones, and all of our courageous West Virginians in uniform during this incredibly difficult time.”

Gov. Justice also issued a proclamation, instructing that all United States and West Virginia flags be displayed at half-staff as a mark of respect and remembrance for Sgt. Maynard.
The flags will remain lowered until the day of the services held in honor of his life. Further information about memorial arrangements will be announced once it becomes accessible.

Gov. Justice authorizes West Virginia National Guard deployment to Southern Border
|
|
Gov. Justice announced that he has approved up to 50 West Virginia National Guard (WVNG) Soldiers and Airmen to deploy to Texas for up to 30 days to support Operation Lone Star (OLS) as a part of an Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) from Texas.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott thanked Gov. Justice for the aid via Twitter.

The WVNG members will work alongside the Texas National Guard and Texas law enforcement partners to detect, deter, and interdict transnational criminal activity between points of entry.
In coordination with the Texas National Guard, the WVNG will send the personnel in August and they will fall under operational control of the Texas National Guard Joint Task Force for OLS.
The Soldiers and Airmen are all volunteers. No units are being mobilized for this support.

Gov. Justice orders flags to half-staff in Cabell County on Saturday for the late William Wayne Bailey, Jr.
|
|
In commemoration of the distinguished life and service of West Virginia Senator William “Billy” Wayne Bailey, Jr., Gov. Justice has issued a proclamation, ordering that all United States and West Virginia State flags on all State-owned facilities throughout Charleston and Cabell County be displayed at half-staff from dawn to dusk on Saturday, June 3, 2023; the day of services celebrating his life.

Gov. Justice announces West Virginia breaks all-time state record for revenue collections through May
|
|
Gov. Justice announced that, 11 months through Fiscal Year 2023, year-to-date collections of more than $5.9 billion are a record $1.72 billion above the YTD estimate and 12.9% ahead of last year, breaking the all-time state record for total collections and total YTD surplus through the month of May.
"This is another historic accomplishment – setting all-time records for total collections and total surplus in state history," Gov. Justice said. "I am beyond proud of the hardworking West Virginians who made these numbers possible, and of all the companies far and wide who have invested in West Virginia, providing good-paying jobs for our people. We’re blessed beyond belief in our state, and it’s a testament to the world continuing to realize that West Virginia is the true diamond in the rough that they all missed.

Gov. Justice dedicates Birdeye Bend with a bang

Gov. Justice held an event in the shadow of the famous Philippi Covered Bridge, the only covered bridge located on a federal highway in the US, to commemorate the newest route of the West Virginia Mountain Rides program, Birdeye Bend.
Birdeye Bend, a scenic loop that leads travelers throughout the northern region of the state, marks the fourth route of the West Virginia Mountain Rides program, a collaborative partnership between the West Virginia Department of Transportation and the West Virginia Department of Tourism to designate and promote the Mountain State’s most scenic country roads. |

At the conclusion of the event, Gov. Justice participated in a ceremonial firing of a replica Civil War cannon, commemorating Philippi's historical significance during the 1860s. Every year on June 3rd, the town holds an event to commemorate the first land battle of the Civil War, fought in Philippi.

Gov. Justice announces Free Fishing Weekend to take place June 10–11
|
|
Gov. Justice announced that West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend will return June 10-11, 2023, and encouraged anglers and their families to plan a trip.
West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend is part of a nationwide effort to make fishing more accessible to the public. During these two days, residents and nonresidents are able to fish for free in West Virginia’s public lakes, streams, and rivers without having to buy a license.

Gov. Justice announces 17 new projects approved by the Water Development Authority
|
|
Gov. Justice announced that the West Virginia Water Development Authority (WDA) recently approved 17 infrastructure-related projects funded by the Economic Enhancement Grant Fund.
To date, the WDA has approved 100 projects with a total project cost of $1.1 billion and a state match of $280 million spread across 43 counties.
The West Virginia Water Development Authority (WDA) manages the Economic Enhancement Grant Fund, which provides matching grants to municipalities for upgrading infrastructure such as water, sewer, economic development, commerce, and tourism projects.
