Weekend Reading
Dear John,
This week, people across the U.S. are meeting with their members of Congress, asking them to formally end the Korean War. After 70 years of tension and uncertainty, it’s long past time that we take steps toward peace. A formal treaty would open the door to family reunifications, diplomatic and humanitarian engagement, and nuclear disarmament. Here’s one way you can join our efforts. Send a message to Congress today! [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Update: Emergency humanitarian response in Sudan: [link removed] Thank you to everyone who has supported our efforts to assist Sudanese refugees arriving in Ethiopia and South Sudan. In April, Enass Muzamel and her two sisters were able to evacuate from Sudan to Ethiopia, with support from AFSC. In this interview, she talks about leaving her home country—and the urgent need to support Sudanese refugees.
Apartheid-Free Communities: A New Initiative to End Israeli Apartheid (June 6, 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT): [link removed] AFSC and a coalition of over 65 faith groups have pledged to oppose all forms of racism and cut all ties to Israeli apartheid. Now we’re asking other faith groups, organizations, and communities to take our pledge to do the same. Join us online June 6 to hear from faith leaders who have signed the pledge. Learn how you can help us build an anti-apartheid movement throughout North America.
America’s flouting of asylum laws, lack of migrant protections creates needless suffering: [link removed] Although Title 42 has ended, the U.S. continues to harm migrants and undermine the right to asylum, says AFSC’s Pedro Rios. Today, the U.S. must “recommit to respecting asylum laws, to protecting those seeking safe harbor, and to increasing accountability and oversight measures so that suffering ends when interaction occurs with U.S. border agents.” (San Diego Union-Tribune)
All Floridians should be worried about DeSantis’ new anti-immigration law: [link removed] Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed one of the most restrictive anti-immigration laws in the country. Starting July 1, it will be much harder for immigrants to work, access health care, and more. “The bill has caused a lot of panic and chaos,” says AFSC’s Guadalupe De La Cruz. AFSC is helping people navigate the law, including engaging lawyers to draft notarized letters for parents and guardians in case something happens to them. (Mother Jones)

But right now, multiple states are advancing anti-LGBTQ legislation, particularly targeting transgender youth. Today and forever, we stand in solidarity with trans people everywhere.
