Dear John,
Tomorrow’s primary election is so important that I left my job in Kentucky and traveled to New Hampshire to volunteer with Sunrise, sharing my county’s story and inspiring people to vote for the Green New Deal champion. People in Eastern Kentucky and Appalachia are suffering from polluted water, black lung disease, low wages, and no access to healthcare. New Hampshire’s vote could help change that.
That’s why it’s so important for us to talk to people about using their vote for Bernie Sanders, the candidate who has shown he’s most ready to take on the oil and gas lobby and champion a Green New Deal. We need help supporting young people like me who are sharing their stories to make sure the Green New Deal is the top focus of the 2020 election. By chipping in every month, you can help ensure we have enough resources to work hard throughout the year and secure victory for our Green New Deal champion.

Back home in Kentucky, coal miners have to fight black lung disease, and many are forced to travel over 100 miles for specialized care. Families have tried to escape the asthma-causing coal dust in the air by moving away, but end up unable to afford new homes in less-polluted areas. In 2000, over 300 million gallons of coal slurry spilled into local rivers, killing all aquatic life in the area. Despite efforts to clean up, some areas have tap water that is unsafe to drink even today.
For countless people in my community, Bernie winning means coal miners could transition into a job that won’t kill them and make a livable wage doing it. We won’t have to worry about coal slurry spills ruining our drinking water or coal dust damaging our lungs.
I’ve been sharing my story with college students in New Hampshire because I want to be able to return home confident that my friends and neighbors will have a presidential nominee who cares about them and their healthcare, environment, and jobs. I have been so moved by the stories these students have shared in return about how a Green New Deal would change their lives, too. We are truly in this together.
Green New Deal voters can make the difference in this election. Already, we’ve inspired over 11,000 people in New Hampshire pledge their vote for the Green New Deal champion. With your support, we can continue this work even beyond the New Hampshire primary.
Let’s lock in this victory.
Sincerely,
Emily Johnson
