This month, we have a LOT to celebrate—not only is it Immigrant Heritage Month, but it’s also Pride Month and Caribbean American Heritage Month! As President Biden noted in his recent proclamation [[link removed]] on Immigrant Heritage Month, it’s really quite simple: “immigrants keep our Nation strong and our economy growing.”
We’ll add that we also make our democracy stronger and more inclusive while bringing change to our communities. And the good news is that more and more New Americans are running for office and winning ( the New American wave [[link removed]] ). We know that we are the leaders we've been waiting for!

However, even as we celebrate, we must also fight back against the attacks on our communities, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signing into law SB 1718 [[link removed]] . This law includes penalties for certain employers if they don’t verify a worker’s immigration status and requires Florida hospitals that accept Medicaid to include a citizenship question on forms, which would discourage many immigrants from getting medical care.
Yesterday, the national “Un Día Sin Inmigrantes” or “A Day Without Immigrants” boycott saw farmworkers staying home from work as well as plant nurseries and other businesses closing for the day in a show of solidarity. We must bring that same energy to our own work this month and every day to stand with immigrants.
