I want to thank you for your generous support this week. With dedicated friends like you on our team, we’re in a stronger position to keep fighting for the issues that matter most to our communities.
And as you know, one issue that has always been central to my work in Congress is gun violence prevention. Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, kicking off Wear Orange Weekend. Americans everywhere will be wearing orange to commemorate the countless lives lost to gun violence, and call for action to end this epidemic once and for all.
Gun violence has become a constant, heartbreaking reality of American life, leaving communities across the country reeling with grief. But, we can’t accept these devastating acts of violence as routine any longer.
I was proud to help pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, an historic, commonsense package to reduce the threat of gun violence and protect our children and schools. This was the most significant gun legislation we’ve seen in a generation, but we must go even further.
Nearly 30 years ago, Congress passed an assault weapons ban which took dangerous weapons of war off the street, and the rate of gun massacres fell across the country. But, Republicans allowed that ban to expire, and mass shootings skyrocketed once again.
Now, it’s time to finish the job and ban assault weapons once and for all – it worked in 1994, and it’ll work today. Congress must find the courage to act, and quickly.
The American people have called on us, as elected representatives, to step up and prevent these tragedies – and I stand with them. Join me in calling on every member of Congress to step up and finally pass common sense gun safety legislation. [[link removed]]
