Latest News Out of New York State

Good news! Two New York State bills we have been working on as part of the JustGreen Partnership coalition have seen movement, and we continue to push for a third:
* The Lead Pipes Right to Know Act has passed both the Senate and Assembly, which is a big win. We now just need Governor Hochul to sign it. It will make information about the location of lead water pipes available to the public, which is necessary so that we can secure funding to remove them.
* The PFAS in Menstrual Products bill passed the Senate, so now we are trying to get it through the Assembly. Given all the work we’ve done to get PFAS ([link removed]) out of everyday stuff, you may know that this is a chemical you do not want in your menstrual products. You can help by t ([link removed]) elling the State Assembly ([link removed]) to pass the PFAS in Menstrual Products Bill.
* NY HEAT Update: We held an emergency rally with our Better Buildings New York coalition today, calling on Governor Hochul and the Assembly to pass the NY HEAT Act before the end of the legislative session next week. The bill will save low- and middle-income households an average of $75 per month on their energy bills. You can help by using this tool to email and call ([link removed]) your state legislators and leadership to urge them to pass the NY HEAT Act.

Many thanks to all of our members who have been helping us on these bills!

Latest News Out of Washington, DC

Unfortunately, the news on the federal front is not good. Congress passed the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which is what they are now calling the dirty debt ceiling deal. Our biggest concerns in the bill were provisions that undermine the National Environmental Policy Act and dismissed all opposition to the Mountain Valley Pipeline, and the final bill passed with these provisions still in it.

However, even though the bill passed and President Biden is expected to sign it, we put up one hell of a fight – leading the charge and making our concerns known to all. In fact, as Dana Johnson reminded us all this morning, we helped kill this dirty permitting deal three times before. And if it wasn’t cruelly used as a bargaining chip in the debt ceiling negotiations, we’re confident we would have crushed it a fourth time.

If you haven’t already, please take a moment to read the letter we and our allies sent to President Biden ([link removed]) during the negotiations. You can also read some of the coverage we generated by scrolling down below. We would like to thank all of our members who helped us in this fight. And we would also like to thank Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore) who answered our call to introduce amendments ([link removed]) before the Senate vote last night. Together, we will find another way to win!

* Climate Burnout: Listen to Rev. Yearwood and Tamara Toles O'Laughlin interview Peggy Shepard for The Coolest Show podcast ([link removed]) . As they look at climate burnout and ways to make our movement more sustainable, they ask Peggy how she’s managed to keep fresh after more than 35 years in the fight.
* Debt Ceiling Deal: Peggy Shepard and Dana Johnson were quoted often this week, expressing our displeasure with the inclusion of provisions in the debt ceiling deal that would harm environmental justice communities for decades to come. This includes the American Prospect ([link removed]) , E&E News ([link removed]) , the Grio ([link removed]) , and Yahoo News ([link removed]) .
* Biden and Climate Justice: Peggy Shepard was featured in a Yale Climate Connections ([link removed]) report card on the Biden administration’s climate justice efforts. It should be noted that this interview was conducted before the administration bargained away NEPA and the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
* Reproductive Justice: Micaela Martinez was featured in the 19th’s article ([link removed]) about the call for the EPA to get involved in reproductive justice, noting that the environmental justice and reproductive justice have been siloed for far too long.
