LGBTQ+ Stories You Should Know About
Happy Pride Month!
It’s the best time of the year: Pride Month! We have 28 endorsed candidates on the ballot this June. We’re excited to support these LGBTQ+ leaders that will keep pushing back against bigots across the country.
Despite the dangerous anti-LGBTQ bills across the country, the support for the LGBTQ+ community is at an all-time high, according to The Advocate. Times are challenging but we know that MOST people are on the right side of history – and the political leaders that we’ve endorsed will keep fighting for us. LGBTQ+ elected officials have led the charge to protect trans people, establishing states like Minnesota, Colorado, California, Illinois, Maryland, and New Mexico as trans refuge states.
Upcoming June Elections Calendar
This June we are watching races in 6 states. There are enormous opportunities to make history in these states:
Some of the historic firsts in June include Danica Roem, running for Virginia state Senate as the first out trans state senator ever elected in the South, Adele McClure, campaigning for the Virginia House of Delegates as the first Black person and first Asian person elected to the legislature from Arlington County, and Justin Short, our candidate for the Kansas City Council who would be the first out gay man elected to the Kansas City Council!
NEW Endorsement: Steve Hansen for Mayor of Sacramento!
Incumbent Mayor Darrell Steinberg recently announced he won’t be running for reelection (thank you for your many years of dedicated service, Mayor!). But we know a great candidate to take his place: former City Councilmember Steve Hansen! Watch Steve’s announcement video here.
Spotlight Candidates: History-makers in Virginia
On June 20th, we’ll be watching our Spotlight candidates make history. Learn more about Rozia Henson’s final campaign push for Virginia House of Delegates and his campaign to be the first out gay Black man elected to the Virginia legislature!

Danica Roem, candidate for Virginia state Senate, was endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign. Danica also made history as the first out trans person elected to the Virginia state House, and with LGBTQ+ Victory Fund’s support, ousted a homophobic incumbent. Her voice in the state legislature is so important to Virginia’s pro-equality future.
Kelly Convirs-Fowler is facing a tough reelection race for Virginia House of Delegates but she’s ready to win. First elected in 2018, Kelly was the first out bisexual woman elected to serve in the Virginia State Assembly where she introduced legislation to remove the ban on marriage equality in Virginia. Her voice and commitment to equality is critical for Virginia’s LGBTQ+ community.
Adele McClure received a new endorsement from the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 51. Adele has led a strong grassroots campaign with over 100 endorsements from the community and from national organizations. With such significant support from the community, we know she is the best candidate for this seat in the Virginia House of Delegates!

Gender-affirming care IS health care.
Leaders like Montana state Representative Zooey Zephyr and Nebraska state Senator Megan Hunt have been at the forefront of the fight for gender-affirming care in states that want to ban this health care right among many more LGBTQ+ rights.
Watch Zooey’s interview on The View here where she explains how detrimental banning trans health care can be for the LGBTQ+ community.
Stay Proud, Stay Hopeful!
Tammy Baldwin reminds us this month of the progress we’ve made for the LGBTQ+ community, of the generations that got us here and of the things we’re still fighting for. Everyone deserves the right to live proudly and safely.
Check out these messages from some of our amazing candidates:
Happy Pride from the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund family to yours. Celebrate safely.
