Happy Pride Month! 

 

While we recognize this Pride Month comes in the midst of bigoted attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, we’re taking this moment to celebrate love, equality, and the strength of our LGBTQ+ community.

 

Throughout Pride Month, we’re highlighting trans and nonbinary lawmakers working to advance progressive change nationwide. We’ll also be taking action to demand that the Senate pass the Equality Act and protect LGBTQ+ rights at the federal level.

 

To kick off Pride Month, we’re celebrating Zooey Zephyr of Missoula, Montana!

In 2022, Zephyr won her election to the Montana House of Representatives. Upon her victory, she became the first openly transgender lawmaker elected in Montana.

 

Unfortunately, Rep. Zephyr’s time in Montana’s state legislature has been marked by baseless censorship from leaders of the extremist Republican supermajority.

 

Since April 26th – just four months after the start of her term – Zephyr has been banned from the House floor after voicing her dissent over a bill that prohibits gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth.

 

But that hasn’t stopped Zephyr from showing up to protect LGBTQ+ rights in Montana. She has worked from benches and hallways in the state capitol building to ensure her voice is still heard – no matter what hateful Republicans have to say about it.

Rep. Zephyr is a true inspiration to us this Pride Month. As anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and legislation increases on the news and across the country, we’re following Zephyr’s lead by raising our voices even louder and refusing to back down from the fight for equality and respect.

 

That’s why we’re calling on you to join us in demanding the Senate pass the Equality Act this June.

 

In the wake of anti-trans legislation, bans on drag performances, and censorship of books featuring LGBTQ+ characters, the Equality Act would overturn state-level attacks on our rights and protect our communities from future acts of discrimination.
