Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade on January 21, 2013. One week later, she was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. She was fifteen.

In the wake of this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends wore orange – the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others – to raise awareness and commemorate her life. But Hadiya, like the 17, 859 others who have died due to gun violence just this year, should not have had to protect themselves from the gun violence epidemic we have in our country.

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and we #WearOrange for:

- The victims of the 268 mass shootings that shattered lives already this year.
- The 764 children and teens who have lost their lives to gun violence so far in 2023.
- The thousands more who may lose their lives if we don’t put a stop to this right now.

We deserve a future free from gun violence, and Republicans in Congress need to take a stand against the gun lobby and choose people’s lives over profit and political gain.
