June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ+ community, and to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City. With rampant anti-trans and anti-gay legislation being passed across the U.S., it’s more important than ever to engage with Pride this year. In particular, queer and trans people are asking allies to educate themselves and others on the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, donate to organizations that support the community, and engage in political action such as calling state representatives. But if you’re already doing that, and especially if your family includes queer and trans people, a great next step to getting your kids involved is taking them to a Pride Parade. With colorful floats, otherworldly outfits, and lots and lots of free goodies, Pride Parades are super fun for kids. Yes, there can be adult content — namely, mild nudity and kink. But by preparing kids for what they might see and helping them process it, their exposure to queer and trans joy will set them on their path toward being a kind, inclusive, and empathetic adult. |
