From fashion to violence: The target was ostensibly the “zoot suit,” a stylish, loose-fitting, wide-lapeled outfit worn at the time by Mexican Americans (pictured above). This month 80 years ago, during World War II, thousands of service members, police, and white Los Angeles residents prowled Latino neighborhoods, beating and stripping Mexican American men wearing the style. The violence was known as the Zoot Suit Riots, but it was really one-sided racial persecution. Last month, L.A. officials apologized for the dark chapter in U.S. history.
