John, this past month, I met with Patricia Oliver, mom of Joaquin Oliver, who was murdered in the Parkland shooting. I read her book, "Joaquin's First School Shooting," and was inspired by her turning grief into action – but it doesn't have to be this way.
This Gun Violence Awareness Day, I am calling on my colleagues in Congress to enact stronger gun violence prevention laws.
Last year, I helped pass the first bipartisan gun safety legislation in three decades. This piece of legislation was a historic first step, and I commend President Biden's subsequent executive actions expanding background checks, too. But I know these steps aren’t enough. In 2023 alone, we've had more than 260 mass shootings – and we're not even halfway through the year.
With today's Republican Party dead set against commonsense gun reform, I need your support to make sure I can continue to push legislation that will literally save lives. With the gun violence epidemic only worsening, will you consider donating $5 or $25 to this campaign so that I can continue to fight for laws that will save lives and protect our children from gun violence?
We're living through a national gun violence crisis, and it's time to take bold action. Thank you for your support. There's work to be done.
